Housing Help for Veterans: Programs That Prevent Homelessness

No veteran should be homeless. The VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program provides critical housing assistance to veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes.

Two Types of Assistance

Rapid Re-Housing helps veterans who are currently homeless:

  • Case management and housing navigation
  • Temporary financial assistance for rent and move-in costs
  • Help finding and securing permanent housing quickly

Homelessness Prevention helps veterans at risk of losing housing:

  • Assistance with rental arrears and utility bills
  • Crisis resolution and case management
  • Connection to ongoing support services

A Veteran-Centered Approach

SSVF follows a “housing first” philosophy—veterans don’t need to meet preconditions like employment verification or sobriety requirements to receive help. The focus is on getting veterans housed quickly, then connecting them with services to address other challenges.

Who Qualifies

SSVF serves very low-income veteran families. Eligibility is based on income level and housing status. Veterans can self-refer or be referred by VA medical centers, community organizations, or other service providers.

“A home is the foundation for everything else—employment, health, family stability. We help veterans build that foundation.”

For All Who Gave All works with local SSVF providers to support homeless veterans in our community.
