The MURPH Challenge: Honoring Heroes Through Fitness
Every Memorial Day, thousands of Americans take on the MURPH Challenge—a grueling workout named after Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. This fitness tradition has become a powerful way to honor fallen service members.
The Workout
The MURPH consists of:
- 1-mile run
- 100 pull-ups
- 200 push-ups
- 300 air squats
- 1-mile run
For the full challenge, participants wear a 20-pound weight vest. The workout can be scaled for beginners by partitioning the exercises or removing the vest.
Lt. Michael Murphy
Lt. Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions during Operation Red Wings. When his four-man team was ambushed, Murphy exposed himself to enemy fire to get a signal and call for help. His sacrifice saved the life of one teammate and demonstrated the courage that defines our special operations forces.
Community MURPH Events
Gyms, veteran organizations, and communities across the country host MURPH events on Memorial Day. These gatherings combine physical challenge with remembrance, often including:
- Reading of names of fallen service members
- Moments of silence
- Fundraising for veteran causes
- Community meals and fellowship
Why It Matters
The MURPH is more than a workout—it is an act of remembrance. The physical difficulty connects participants, in a small way, to the sacrifices made by those who gave everything.
“If you want to honor heroes, push yourself. That discomfort is nothing compared to what they endured.”
For All Who Gave All hosts an annual Memorial Day MURPH event. Join us to honor the fallen through fitness.
