Women Veterans: Breaking Barriers and Building Community

Women are the fastest-growing segment of the veteran population, yet they often face unique challenges when transitioning to civilian life. Understanding these challenges—and the resources available—is essential for supporting all who served.

A Growing Population

Women now make up approximately 10% of all veterans and nearly 17% of active duty forces. By 2040, women are projected to comprise over 18% of the veteran population. Yet many VA programs and community services were originally designed with male veterans in mind.

Unique Challenges

Women veterans may face:

  • Military sexual trauma (MST) and its lasting effects
  • Difficulty having their service recognized by civilians
  • Childcare challenges when accessing VA services
  • Healthcare needs specific to women
  • Underrepresentation in veteran service organizations

VA Resources for Women

The VA has expanded services for women veterans:

  • Women Veterans Health Program at every VA medical center
  • Maternity care coordination
  • MST counseling (available to all veterans regardless of VA enrollment)
  • Women Veteran Program Managers at each facility

Building Community

Women veteran groups provide peer support and networking. Organizations like Women Veterans Interactive and local women veteran chapters create spaces where women can connect with others who share their experiences.

“Women veterans served with honor. They deserve services that recognize their unique experiences.”

For All Who Gave All welcomes and supports veterans of all backgrounds. Contact us to connect with women veteran resources in your community.
